Antimicrobial susceptibility of Clostridium perfringens isolated from piglets with or without diarrhea in Brazil BJM
Salvarani,Felipe Masiero; Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Pires,Prhiscylla Sadanã; Cruz Júnior,Eduardo Coulaud da Costa; Albefaro,Isabella Silva; Guedes,Roberto Maurício de Carvalho; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined for 13 antibiotics against Clostridium perfringens isolated from Brazilian piglets. The collection of isolates was performed in June to October 2010. All isolates were susceptible to amoxicillin and ceftiofur, whereas most were resistant to tetracycline and lincomycin. Avilamycin and narasin were more effective against isolates from non-diarrheic than from diarrheic piglets. The other antimicrobials were less active in need of high concentrations to inhibit the growth of the C. perfringens type A. These results suggest the need for further studies evaluating molecular factors related to the antimicrobial resistance of C. perfringens.

Assessing the implications of mycotoxins on productive efficiency of broilers and growing pigs Scientia Agricola
Kipper,Marcos; Andretta,Ines; Ribeiro,Andréa Machado Leal; Pires,Paula Gabriela da Silva; Franceschina,Carolina Schell; Cardinal,Kátia Maria; Moraes,Priscila de Oliveira; Schroeder,Bruna.
ABSTRACT: The effects of mycotoxins on the productive performance of growing pigs and broilers were evaluated using meta-analytical approach. Two databases were constructed: (1) Broilers, with information collected from 51,497 birds and published in 158 scientific papers from 1980 to 2016; and (2) Pigs, with information collected from 7,743 animals and published in 72 scientific papers from 1980 to 2015. The meta-analyses were performed independently for each specie, following three sequential analyses: graphical, correlation, and variance-covariance. Broilers and pigs challenged by mycotoxins reduced (p < 0.05) feed intake by 9 and 6 %, weight gain by 15 and 11 %, and feed efficiency by 6 and 4 % compared with non-challenged animals, respectively....

The aim of the study was to evaluate the behaviour, pre-weaning survival rate and growth performance of low birth weight (BW) piglets cross-fostered with piglets of higher weights. Piglets were transferred to 60 foster sows, and divided in three groups (G; n=20): G1- 12 low BW piglets (0.80 - 1.25kg); G2- six low BW piglets and six intermediate BW piglets (1.40 - 1.60kg), and G3- six low BW piglets and six high BW piglets (>1.70kg). For the analysis, groups G2 and G3 were subdivided in LG2 (six G2 light piglets); IG2 (six G2 intermediate piglets), LG3 (six G3 light piglets), and HG3 (six G3 heavy piglets). Behavioural observations were carried out on days 1, 2, 4 and 6 (visual direct observation) and on days 3 and 5 (video recording) after birth. The...

Effect of adding macro and micro minerals in pig feces fed diets with different levels of probiotic BABT
Huaynate,Rizal Alcides Robles; Thomaz,Maria Cristina; Kronka,Rodolfo Nascimento; Fraga,Alessandro Luís; Scandolera,Antônio João; Budiño,Fábio Enrique Lemos.
This study aimed to verify the effect of diets with different doses (0, 100, 200 and 300 ppm) of probiotic on daily fecal production (DFP) and level of macro and micro minerals in feces of nursing (1st and 2nd initial phases) and growing pigs and during total period. The DFP, as percentage of body weight, was different (P<0.05) among treatments only at 1st initial phase. Fecal levels of macro and micro minerals were similar (P>0.05) among treatments, with exception of calcium and sodium excretion at 1st initial phase and calcium, zinc and nickel during total period. The addition of a poliprobiotic to diets do not affect fecal production of nursing and growing pigs. However, the presence of microorganisms, added (levels of 200 and 300 ppm) in diets...

Effects of maternal artificial vocalization on hyperprolific lactating sows and piglets behavior Anais da ABC (AABC)
MOREIRA,RENNAN H.R.; OLIVEIRA,RODRIGO F. DE; PALENCIA,JORGE Y.P.; LEMES,MARINA A.G.; SILVA,MARILANE D.; GARBOSSA,CESAR A.P.; ABREU,MÁRVIO L.T. DE; MOURA,GISELLE B. DE; FERREIRA,RONY A..
Abstract The objective of this trial was to evaluate the behavioral patterns and performance of lactating sows and their litters under the effect of artificial vocalization. Twenty-eight sows and their litters were distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2x2 factorial scheme (artificial vocalization x lactation week). The behavior of the animals was monitored during 24 hours on the 7th and 15th days of lactation, analyzing the number, interval, and frequency of nursings. The body condition and performance of the sows were also evaluated. Artificial vocalization promoted higher frequencies of eating for sow and nursing for piglets (P <0.05), increased inactive sow behavior (P <0.05), and reduced sow alert in activity (P <0.05). The...

Perin,Jonas; Gaggini,Thais Schwarz; Manica,Samuel; Magnabosco,Diogo; Bernardi,Mari Lourdes; Wentz,Ivo; Bortolozzo,Fernando Pandolfo.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of different temperature control systems on the voluntary feed intake (VFI), percentage of weight loss (PWL) and performance of lactating sows as well as on the weight of their piglets. Two systems were used: traditional temperature control system (TTCS) with curtain management and an evaporative snout cooling system (ESCS). The study was performed during the summer of 2011. After farrowing and at the weaning, 241 sows were weighed to evaluate the PWL during lactation. TTCS sows lost more weight (5.3±0.9%; P<0.05) than ESCS sows (2.2±0.9%). VFI was measured at intervals of four days in 32 primiparous and 39 multiparous sows. ESCS sows had higher VFI (5.8±0.2kg day-1; P<0.05) than TTCS sows (4.8±0.2kg...

Feed additives can differentially modulate NF-κB (RelA/p65), IGF-1, GLUT2, and SGLT1 gene expression in porcine jejunal explants R. Bras. Zootec.
Silveira,Hebert; Melo,Antonio Diego Brandão; Bortoluzzi,Cristiano; Costa,Leandro Batista; Rostagno,Marcos Horácio; Schinckel,Allan Paul; Garbossa,Cesar Augusto Pospissil; Cantarelli,Vinícius de Souza.
ABSTRACT The intestinal gene expression of RelA/p65 (NF-κB), insulin growth factor 1 (IGF-1), glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2), and Na+/dependent glucose transporter 1 (SGLT1) were evaluated in response to benzoic acid, yeast culture, L-glutamine, and oregano essential oil, using an ex vivo model. Six piglets weighing approximately 20 kg each were sacrificed, and their jejunum was collected and segmented into five 2-cm explants. Each explant was immersed in cell culture medium according to one of the following treatments: control (without additive), 0.5% benzoic acid, 1% yeast culture, 1% L-glutamine, and 0.015% oregano oil. Gene expression was evaluated using RT-PCR. Yeast culture up-regulated the gene expression of RelA/p65, IGF-1, GLUT2, and SGLT1 in...

Linares,Rita de Cássia; Barry,Aline Fernandes; Alfieri,Alice Fernandes; Médici,Kerlei Cristina; Feronato,César; Grieder,Wladimir; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo.
Neonatal diarrhea is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in piglets, and it leads to significant economic losses for pig farmers worldwide. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of diagnosis, age group, and association of group A rotavirus (GARV) infection with diarrhea in piglets from pig herds in two (south and center-west)Brazilian geographical regions. The frequency of GARV diagnosis was evaluated between 2004 and 2007, using SS-PAGE on 681 fecal samples (428 diarrheic and 253 with normal consistency) from 1-4 week-old piglets. The animals were selected from 130 pig herds and 80 counties in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Mato Grosso, Brazil. None of the herds were vaccinated...
